A Vision Born from Firsthand Experience
Phoenix Ability was founded in 2022 by Ruby Makinson, who, at the time, was working as a Mental Health Occupational Therapist. Through her hands-on experience, Ruby saw the vital role a motivated and well-supported Support Worker could play in the lives of participants and the overall care team.
Meaningful Support, Always
With this insight, Ruby established Phoenix Ability to deliver meaningful support with professionalism, care, and personal connection. From day one, our purpose has been clear—to provide accountable, effective support that empowers people to lead fulfilling lives. By staying small and local, we ensure every participant and worker are valued, supported and receives the attention they deserve.
Our Values
We believe in:
Matching, Growing & Leading With Purpose
Matching People With the Right Support
At Phoenix Ability, we are a close-knit, collaborative team. Each staff member brings their own experience and approach, allowing us to match the right worker with the right participant. Every team member is part of our hub-and-spoke model, contributing their insights into business decisions and participant strategies.
Meet Before You Commit
We also offer both telehealth and face-to-face meetings prior to service engagement. Referrers are encouraged to speak directly with our team members to ensure the best fit before proceeding.
Growing With Purpose
Since our founding, we’ve expanded our services while staying committed to our original vision while reaching more individuals in need of care. We’ve introduced innovative approaches to build life skills, improve independence, and connect people with their communities.
Investing in People
We’ve built a comprehensive staff training program to support ongoing professional development. This ensures our team remains capable, confident, and responsive to participants' evolving needs. It also allows us to maintain high standards of service delivery across every role.
Real Impact
Our workers have made a genuine difference by supporting participants through everyday milestones—like applying for rental assistance, maintaining friendships, or staying connected to therapy. These moments matter. They reflect the outcomes we strive for every day.
Leadership With Insight
Ruby’s background as both an Occupational Therapist and a Support Worker gives her a unique understanding of participant needs and workforce development. This dual experience shapes how we operate—with practical, person-centred thinking at every level.
Innovating for Better Outcomes
We’re committed to growing our impact while staying true to our roots. Our aim is to expand thoughtfully—introducing new tools, training, and resources that strengthen our ability to serve. Above all, we’ll continue to listen, learn, and adapt—because better outcomes begin with collaboration. Together, we are the difference.
