Meet Our Team
Ruby Makinson:
Hello! I am the owner of Phoenix Ability offering direct Support Worker and Peer Mentor sessions.
I have 11 years of experience working in hospital and community-based settings as an Assistant Nurse, Support Worker, Therapy Assistant and Occupational Therapist with children, adolescents, adults and aged care. I work with those who experience physical and mental health challenges and am experienced in offering assistance in areas of mental health, personal care and medical management. I have specialized knowledge in sensory needs, mental health management and supporting activity engagement and managing varied challenges.
Although not providing OT services, my experience means I am adept in supporting my participants to build on their strengths, meaningfully engage in their life activities and manage their challenges. Within my nursing roles, I have experience with participants who have physical health needs and am well-versed in using sling lifts, wheelchair positioning etc. I have worked with participants across the lifespan and see great value in working with the people around the participants including parents and significant others.
My interests are Doctor Who, console gaming, craft projects, reading and board games. My special skill is completing a Rubik’s cube. I get a lot of enjoyment from being outdoors whether it's a mindful walk at the You Yangs, visiting the zoo or having a BBQ at the park. I also enjoy supporting my participants in their personally meaningful activities and am quite good at sharing a genuine interest in others' passions.
I work with participants and families to empower them in living a meaningful life. I am passionate about all of my roles and with my caring connection, you’ll notice the difference.
